Program Information

The ACTAS/NITP is a partnered program involving the ACT Academy of Sport (ACTAS), Basketball Australia and Basketball ACT which is currently operating on an interim basis until the end of 2012 pending a new partnership agreement.

The program would generally have approximately 22 athletes in total on scholarship (10 full ACTAS, ACTAS Associates and NITP) and as part of its ongoing talent identification objective other athletes are invited to attend specific sessions during the season and take part in events such as combined camps, group sessions and tour games.

In this way, athletes who display the necessary improvement in their Club and representative commitments will still be offered extra opportunities to assist with their development and that of the entire Basketball ACT program.

Similarly other ACTAS graduates such as Sarah McAppion currently at College in the USA are assisted with their off-season S & C programs under Associate Scholarship agreements with ACTAS.

The ACTAS Scholarship holders have individually tailored S & C sessions twice weekly at ACTAS’s Lyneham gym under the supervision of ACTAS staff which incorporate regular physical testing, flexibility and strength assessments. They also attend weekly on court sessions (frequency depending on prioritisation and periodisation) based on skill acquisition and playing concepts.

The NITP athletes attend regular weekly group session from September through to February (off-season for representative commitments) and from February through to end of scholarship period they attend weekly small group session based around skill acquisition, playing concepts and introductory on court (body weight) strength and conditioning principles.

In addition the ACTAS/NITP attends two combined camps with NSW’s NITP program in February (Under 16s) and July (Under 18s), sends Under 16 and Under 18 teams to the East Coast Challenge each January, selects and takes talent identification teams to the Sydney Cup each January, invites six of the junior scholarship holders to take part in the Capital Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program each November, plays a revolving schedule of invitation games against touring opponents (Japanese Junior National team and Canadian High School varsity teams in 2011) and recently took a tour to the USA involving the majority of the full ACTAS Scholarship holders.
